Getting Through Your CTSR Assessment

All CBT therapists need to be familiar with the CTSR review system. Assessment using the CTSR framework is a key part of the the BABCP accreditation and reaccreditation system. This blog post highlights some of the key considerations you will want to bear in mind in order to get through your CTSR review.

  1. Know the CTS-R Inside Out: Study the CTS-R manual thoroughly, understanding the specific criteria for each dimension. This will help you tailor your interventions and ensure you’re demonstrating the required skills.
  2. Choose the Right Session: Select a session that showcases your ability to apply CBT techniques effectively. A session in the middle phase of therapy, where you’re actively challenging cognitions and implementing behavioural strategies, is often ideal.
  3. Practice Makes Perfect: Rehearse your session with a colleague or supervisor, focusing on the key elements assessed by the CTS-R. This will help you identify areas for improvement and build your confidence.
  4. Set the Stage: Start the session with a clear agenda, collaboratively set with the client. This demonstrates your ability to structure the session and involve the client in the process.
  5. Active Listening & Empathetic Responding: Show genuine interest in your client’s experiences by actively listening and responding with empathy. This builds rapport and creates a safe space for exploration.
  6. Collaborative Problem-Solving: Involve your client in the therapeutic process by collaborating on goal setting, identifying problems, and developing solutions. This empowers your client and demonstrates your collaborative approach.
  7. Skillful Questioning: Use open-ended questions to encourage your client to explore their thoughts and feelings in depth. Also, employ Socratic questioning to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns.
  8. Clear & Concise Explanations: Explain CBT concepts clearly and concisely, tailoring your explanations to your client’s understanding. Avoid jargon and use simple language.
  9. Homework & Behavioural Activation: Set specific and achievable homework tasks to reinforce learning and promote behavioural change. Discuss potential obstacles and provide support for implementation.
  10. Summarize & Check-In: Conclude the session with a summary of key points and a check-in with the client. This reinforces learning and allows for any final questions or concerns.

Remember, the CTS-R is not just about demonstrating your knowledge of CBT, but also about your ability to apply it effectively in a therapeutic relationship. By following these tips and staying focused on your client’s needs, you can increase your chances of success in your CTSR assessment.
